Feel All of
Our Feelings
Practice 1
All of us interfere, one way or another, with the natural flow of emotion. For instance, we may numb ourselves to avoid feeling sadness, we may suppress anger to avoid acting out destructively, or we may take ourselves to anger in order to avoid feeling fear. These internal habits alienate us from our true selves, and detract from the quality of our lives.
The Way of the Higher Self addresses these distortions through a mindful practice of allowing feelings without resistance, with the understanding that they're transitory, and that we're going to “come out the other end of the feelings tunnel,” so to speak. This doesn't mean, however, that we allow ourselves to act out our negative feelings. We just patiently allow the discomfort until it passes, because when it does, the higher self will manifest, we'll see the situation with wisdom and compassion, and we'll be able to tap into a truly constructive response.
In this respect, by the way, The Way of the Higher Self overlaps with psychotherapy. Many of the ways we interfere with the normal flow of our emotions were learned in childhood, and revisiting the early experiences from which we learned our emotional habits helps us to understand them more fully. With this understanding comes greater awareness of how our habits don't serve us, and a willingness to let go of our destructive patterns.
Intro to Feeling All of Our Feelings, Part One
In order to lay a foundation for the practices in Part Two, Karl explains what feelings are; how we interfere with the natural, organic flow of our feelings; why we interfere; what are the costs of interfering, and what would the benefits be if we stopped interfering, concluding with a note about anxiety and depression.
Intro to Feeling All of Our Feelings, Part Two
This episode focuses on specific techniques to allow emotional energy to flow in its natural, organic pathways, rather than obstructing or manipulating it. The techniques include surrendering to feelings in the moment, daily journaling which includes activating feelings which were interfered with during the day, accessing long-thwarted feelings, and overcoming the tendency to numb ourselves in general.
